● 많은 시간을 기도로 보내라 ───────────────────────────────────────────────

「 기독교 교리의 대가들이나 위대한 교사들은 교리 해명의 최고 원천을 늘 그들의 기도에서 찾아왔다. 굳이 영국 교회의 테두리를 벗어나지 않더라도, 앤드류스 주교는 매일 다섯 시간을 무릎을 꿇고 보냈다고 기록되어 있다. 기독교 시대들에 있어서 인간의 삶을 풍요하게 하고 아름답게 했던 가장 위대하고 실제적인 결단들은 기도에서 비롯된 것들이었다. 」 ─ 캐논 리든 ─   개인적인 기도들은 많은 경우 당연히 짧아야만 하며, 공적인 기도들도 대개 짧고 간결해야만 합니다. 또한 기도 가운데는 돌발적인 기도도 있을 수 있고, 그것 역시 그만한 가치가 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 하나님과 갖는 개인적인 교제에 있어, 시간은 그 교제의 가치를 재는 근본적인 요소입니다. 하나님과 많은 시간을 보내는 것이 모든 성공적인 기도의 비결입니다. 강력한 힘을 지닌 것으로 느껴지는 기도는 직접, 혹은 간접적으로 하나님과 많은 시간을 함께 보낸 데서 말미암는 결과입니다. 우리의 짧은 기도들은, 그 효과와 능력에 있어, 우리가 그것들에 앞서 드렸던 긴 기도에 힘입고 있습니다. 오래 계속되는 강력한 기도의 싸움에서 하나님을 설복시키지 못한 사람이 짧지만 승리하는 기도를 드릴 수는 없습니다. 밤새도록 씨름하지 않았다면, 야곱의 믿음의 승리는 얻어질 수 없었을 것입니다. 하나님과 친숙해지는 것은 어쩌다가 한 번 방문하는 것으로 이루어지지 않습니다. 하나님은 그냥 바쁘게 왔다갔다 하는 사람에게 은사를 주시지 않습니다. 혼자서 하나님과 오랜 시간을 보내는 것이 하나님을 알고, 하나님을 움직이는 비결입니다. 하나님께서는 그분을 아는 믿음에서 말미암는 지속적인 간구에 응답하십니다. 하나님은 끈기 있는 진지함과 성실함으로 은사들을 갈망하고 감사히 여기는 자들에게 은사를 주십니다. 다른 일에서와 마찬가지로 이 일에 있어서도 우리의 모범이신 주 예수님(Lord Jesus Christ)께서는 여러 차례 온 밤을 기도로 새우셨습니다. 많이 기도하는 것이 그분의 관례였습니다. 주 예수님은 또한 정해진 기도 장소를 가지고 계셨습니다. 여러 차례의 긴 기도 기간들이 그분의 이력과 성격을 만들어 냈습니다. 바울은 밤이고 낮이고 기도했습니다. 다니엘이 하루 세 차례 기도했다는 것은 다니엘이 가장 중요한 관심사에 시간을 할애했음을 보여줍니다. 다윗의 아침, 한낮, 그리고 밤 기도는 의심할 여지없이 오랜 시간 지속된 기도들이었습니다. 이들 성경 상의 성도들이 기도로 보낸 시간에 대해 정확한 설명을 찾을 수는 없지만, 그들은 많은 시간을 기도로 보냈고 어떤 경우는 길게 기도하는 것이 그들의 관례였다는 암시들이 있습니다.   그들의 기도의 가치를 시계로써 재려는 생각을 해서는 절대로 안됩니다. 우리의 목적은 하나님과 홀로 보내는 시간이 많아야 한다는 필요성에 우리 마음을 집중시키려는 것입니다. 그리고 만일 우리의 믿음에 의해서 이러한 특징이 드러나지 않는다면, 우리의 믿음은 나약하고 표피적인 형태의 신앙입니다.   그들의 성품이 가장 왕성하게 예수 그리스도를 드러낸 사람들, 그분을 위해 세상에 가장 커다란 영향력을 행사한 사람들은 하나님과 많은 시간을 함께 하는 것을 그들 생애의 가장 두드러진 특징으로 삼은 사람들입니다. 찰스 시므온(Charles Simeon)은 아침 4시부터 8시까지를 하나님께 드렸습니다. 웨슬리(Wesley)는 매일 2시간을 기도로 보냈습니다. 그는 아침 4시에 기도를 시작했습니다. 그를 잘 아는 한 사람은 그에 대해 이렇게 기록했습니다：“그는 어떤 것보다도 기도가 자기의 가장 중요한 일이라고 생각했습니다. 나는 그가 얼굴에 빛나는 듯한 평안함을 지니고 골방에서 나오는 것을 본 적이 있습니다.” 존 플레처(John Fletcher)는 그의 방벽을 기도의 숨결로 얼룩지게 했습니다. 그는 종종 온 밤을 새워 기도했습니다. 그는 항상, 자주, 그리고 아주 진지하게 기도했습니다. 그의 전 생애는 기도의 생애였습니다. 그는 “나는 내 마음을 하나님께 올려 드리지 않고는 자리에서 일어나지 않을 것이다”라고 말했습니다. 그가 친구에게 하는 인사는 언제나 “기도로 만날까요?”였습니다. 루터(Luther)는 이렇게 말했습니다：“내가 매일 아침 2시간씩 기도하지 못하면 사탄이 그날의 승리를 앗아갑니다. 나는 할 일이 매우 많기 때문에, 하루에 3시간을 기도하지 않고는 일을 해 나갈 수 없습니다.” 루터는 한 가지 좌우명을 가지고 있었습니다：“기도를 잘한 사람이 연구도 잘한 사람이다.”   레이튼 대주교(Archbishop Leighton)는 홀로 하나님과 함께 하는 시간이 얼마나 많았던지 마치 쉬지 않고 묵상에 잠겨 있는 것처럼 보일 정도였습니다. 그의 전기 작가는 “기도와 찬양은 그의 일이며 기쁨이었다”고 말합니다. 켄 주교(Bishop Ken)는 그의 혼이 하나님께 매혹당했다는 말을 들을 정도로 많은 시간을 하나님과 보냈습니다. 그는 매일 아침 시계가 3시를 치기도 전에 하나님과 교제하고 있었습니다. 애즈베리 주교(Bishop Asbury)는 “내가 자주 그렇게 했던 것처럼, 4시에 일어나서 기도와 묵상으로 2시간을 보내기를 제안한다”고 말했습니다. 그의 경건의 향기가 아직도 풍성한 사무엘 러더포드(Samuel Rutherford)는 기도 가운데 하나님을 만나기 위해 새벽 3시에 일어났습니다. 조셉 알레인(Joseph Alleine)은 기도하기 위해 4시에 일어나 8시까지 기도했습니다. 그가 일어나기 전에 다른 상인들이 장사를 하러 오가는 소리를 들으면, 그는 이렇게 한탄했습니다：“오, 이 얼마나 부끄러운 일인가! 우리 주님이 그들의 주인보다 더 소중하지 않단 말인가!” 이 상인들에게서 잘 배운 사람은 그 즉시, 원하는 대로, 하늘의 다함이 없는 보고에 다가갈 수 있습니다.   스코틀랜드에서 가장 경건하고 가장 뛰어난 설교자 가운데 한 사람은 이렇게 말합니다：“나는 가장 귀중한 시간을 하나님과의 교제로 보내야만 합니다. 그것이 나의 가장 고상하고 가장 결실 있는 일이며, 그것은 결코 한구석에 밀어둘 일이 아닙니다. 아침 시간 가운데 6시부터 8시까지는 가장 방해받지 않는 시간이며, 따라서 이 시간은 하나님과의 교제에 사용되어야만 합니다. 오후의 차(茶) 시간 이후는 내게 가장 좋은 시간이며, 그 시간도 하나님께 엄숙히 드려져야 합니다. 나는 오래도록 유지해 온 좋은 습관인 취침 전 기도를 결코 포기하지 않을 것입니다. 그러나 이 때는 잠이 오는 것을 경계해야만 합니다. 한 밤중에 깰 경우, 나는 일어나서 기도해야만 합니다. 아침 식사 이후의 짧은 시간은 중보기도를 위해 드려져야만 합니다.” 이것이 로버트 맥체인(Robert McCheyne)의 기도 계획이었습니다. 기억할 만한 감리교도들도 기도에 있어서 우리를 부끄럽게 합니다：“아침 4시부터 5시까지, 개인기도. 저녁 5시부터 6시까지, 개인기도.”   경건하고 뛰어난 스코틀랜드 설교자인 존 웰치(John Welch)는 8시간 내지 10시간 기도하지 않은 날은 그 날을 잘못 보냈다고 생각했습니다. 그는 밤에 기도하기 위해 일어났을 때 덮을 수 있도록 망토를 준비해 놓았습니다. 그의 아내는 그가 바닥에 엎드려 울고 있는 모습을 보면 불평을 하곤 했습니다. 그럴 때면 그는 이렇게 대답했습니다：“내게는 책임져야 할 3,000명의 혼들이 있소. 나는 그들 가운데 많은 사람이 어떤 형편에 있는지 알지 못한단 말이오.” ┃ E.M. 바운즈 /『 기도의 능력ː(제7장) 』... ┃ 【 Chapter 7ːMUCH TIME SHOULD BE GIVEN TO PRAYER 】 「 The great masters and teachers in Christian doctrine have always found in prayer their highest source of illumination. Not to go beyond the limits of the English Church, it is recorded of Bishop Andrews that he spent five hours daily on his knees. The greatest practical resolves that have enriched and beautified human life in Christian times have been arrived at in prayer. 」 ─ Canon Liddon ─   WHILE many private prayers, in the nature of things, must be short; while public prayers, as a rule, ought to be short and condensed; while there is ample room for and value put on ejaculatory prayer ─ yet in our private communions with God time is a feature essential to its value. Much time spent with God is the secret of all successful praying. Prayer which is felt as a mighty force is the mediate or immediate product of much time spent with God. Our short prayers owe their point and efficiency to the long ones that have preceded them. The short prevailing prayer cannot be prayed by one who has not prevailed with God in a mightier struggle of long continuance. Jacob’s victory of faith could not have been gained without that all-night wrestling. God’s acquaintance is not made by pop calls. God does not bestow his gifts on the casual or hasty comers and goers. Much with God alone is the secret of knowing him and of influence with him. He yields to the persistency of a faith that knows him. He bestows his richest gifts upon those who declare their desire for and appreciation of those gifts by the constancy as well as earnestness of their importunity. Christ, who in this as well as other things is our Example, spent many whole nights in prayer. His custom was to pray much. He had his habitual place to pray. Many long seasons of praying make up his history and character. Paul prayed day and night. It took time from very important interests for Daniel to pray three times a day. David’s morning, noon, and night praying were doubtless on many occasions very protracted. While we have no specific account of the time these Bible saints spent in prayer, yet the indications are that they consumed much time in prayer, and on some occasions long seasons of praying was their custom.   We would not have any think that the value of their prayers is to be measured by the clock, but our purpose is to impress on our minds the necessity of being much alone with God; and that if this feature has not been produced by our faith, then our faith is of a feeble and surface type.   The men who have most fully illustrated Christ in their character, and have most powerfully affected the world for him, have been men who spent so much time with God as to make it a notable feature of their lives. Charles Simeon devoted the hours from four till eight in the morning to God. Mr. Wesley spent two hours daily in prayer. He began at four in the morning. Of him, one who knew him well wrote：“He thought prayer to be more his business than anything else, and I have seen him come out of his closet with a serenity of face next to shining.” John Fletcher stained the walls of his room by the breath of his prayers. Sometimes he would pray all night; always, frequently, and with great earnestness. His whole life was a life of prayer. “I would not rise from my seat,” he said, “without lifting my heart to God.” His greeting to a friend was always： “Do I meet you praying?” Luther said：“If I fail to spend two hours in prayer each morning, the devil gets the victory through the day. I have so much business I cannot get on without spending three hours daily in prayer.” He had a motto：“He that has prayed well has studied well.”   Archbishop Leighton was so much alone with God that he seemed to be in a perpetual meditation. “Prayer and praise were his business and his pleasure,” says his biographer. Bishop Ken was so much with God that his soul was said to be God-enamored. He was with God before the clock struck three every morning. Bishop Asbury said：“I propose to rise at four o’clock as often as I can and spend two hours in prayer and meditation.” Samuel Rutherford, the fragrance of whose piety is still rich, rose at three in the morning to meet God in prayer. Joseph Alleine arose at four o’clock for his business of praying till eight. If he heard other tradesmen plying their business before he was up, he would exclaim：“O how this shames me! Doth not my Master deserve more than theirs?” He who has learned this trade well draws at will, on sight, and with acceptance of heaven’s unfailing bank.   One of the holiest and among the most gifted of Scotch preachers says：“I ought to spend the best hours in communion with God. It is my noblest and most fruitful employment, and is not to be thrust into a corner. The morning hours, from six to eight, are the most uninterrupted and should be thus employed. After tea is my best hour, and that should be solemnly dedicated to God. I ought not to give up the good old habit of prayer before going to bed; but guard must be kept against sleep. When I awake in the night, I ought to rise and pray. A little time after breakfast might be given to intercession.” This was the praying plan of Robert McCheyne. The memorable Methodist band in their praying shame us. “From four to five in the morning, private prayer; from five to six in the evening, private prayer.”   John Welch, the holy and wonderful Scotch preacher, thought the day ill spent if he did not spend eight or ten hours in prayer. He kept a plaid that he might wrap himself when he arose to pray at night. His wife would complain when she found him lying on the ground weeping. He would reply：“O woman, I have the souls of three thousand to answer for, and I know not how it is with many of them!” ┃ E.M.
